Urafiki Karovana School, a primary institution in Ruiru-Nairobi corridor, installed an 11kWh solar system to eliminate daily blackouts that disrupted lessons, computer labs, and water pumping. Before solar, the school spent KES 28,000 monthly on diesel for backup generators—and still faced 4–6 hour outages during peak demand periods.

After a feasibility study by SkyGen, the school opted for a hybrid solution:

  • 30 x 370W monocrystalline panels (11.1kW total)
  • 11kWh lithium battery bank
  • 10kVA hybrid inverter with remote monitoring
  • Dedicated circuit for ICT lab, administration, and the borehole pump

The system was mounted on the school’s red corrugated roof, using non-penetrating rails to preserve the roof’s integrity. The installation was completed in 4 days with minimal class disruption.

Results after 5 months:
✓ Zero diesel use for lighting and ICT operations
✓ Reliable power for 8 hours daily—even during grid failure
✓ KES 24,000+ saved monthly
✓ Teachers report improved student focus and extended study hours

The headteacher said: “Our computers now run every day. Our students no longer miss science practicals because the lights went out.”
